In a review of counter-terrorism policies in Belgium, UN Special Rapporteur Fionnuala Ní Aoláin called on the government to establish a systematic de-radicalization regime in its prisons, alleviate fair trial concerns for its foreign-fighter citizens in other countries, and create an "independent oversight mechanism" to review rights issues relating to counter-terrorism.

Chair of the UN Security Council Counter-Terrorism Committee Gustavo Adolfo Meza-Cuadra Velasquez has called for governments to respond to the online glorification of terrorism through "effective counter-narratives" promoting "community solidarity and peaceful avenues for addressing conditions conducive to the spread of terrorism."

UN Special Rapporteur on the protection of human rights in the context of countering terrorism Fionnuala Ni Aolain has warned France that its new counter-terrorism laws may violate international human rights obligations related to privacy and liberty and may "stigmatize and further marginalize citizens of the Muslim faith" as a "per se 'suspect community.'"

UNESCO Hosts Training on Education to Prevent Extremism

A recent workshop hosted in Venice, Italy, by the UN Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), as part of the UN agency's drive for "Global Citizenship Education," trained representatives from Southeast Europe on how to use their education policies to prevent radicalization and violent extremism.
