The UN Environment Programme has touted a recent joint statement from environment ministers of the Group of 7 countries (G7) after meeting in Bologna supporting the UN agency's agenda on channeling investments from the financial industry and small and medium enterprises into "sustainable finance" that supports projects combating climate change.

UN Agency Calls for Phaseout of "Single-Use Plastic"

At the UN's recent Oceans Conference in New York, the UN Environment Programme used a petition signed by a million people to advocate for a "global ban on single-use plastic" within the next five years to reduce plastic pollution in the oceans.

Reuters reports that, in the wake of US President Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the US from the UN's Paris climate deal, technology giant Apple issued a $1 billion "green bond" that it says it will use to drive private investment toward funding renewable energy projects and increase energy efficiency at its facilities.

UN Agent Seeks Business Pressure Against Forced Labor

UN Special Rapporteur on trafficking in persons Maria Grazia Giammarinaro published a report in June calling on businesses to place pressure on their global suppliers to end forced labor practices and pushing countries to replace voluntary standards on such practices for businesses with government-backed "enhanced collaboration" mechanisms.
