NGOs Urge Japan to Publish BHR Action Plan

A group of nongovernmental organizations has published an open letter to Japanese authorities calling on them to take "immediate steps" to publish a "national action plan" on implementing the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (BHR) and the Sustainable Development Goals that reflects global guidance issued by the UN Working Group on BHR issues.

Oxfam Presses AIIB on "Clean" Energy

An Oxfam press release on its monitoring of negotiations between the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and South Korean officials on energy development funding shows the pressure nongovernmental organizations plan to place on the AIIB to ensure that its infrastructure investments comply with the UN's Paris climate deal and "sustainable development" agenda.

CoE Holds Seminar on Business and Human Rights

The Council of Europe (CoE) has continued its push for its member countries to implement global standards on holding businesses responsible for alleged human rights violations across the globe, convening "international partners, national governments, experts, academics and civil society representatives" for a high-level seminar on "human rights and business" in June.

NGO: FIFA Must Pressure Russian Officials on Rights

Denis Krivosheev of Amnesty International has published an op-ed asserting that the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has a responsibility to "don the referee's jersey" in response to Russian crackdowns on public protests at its 2018 World Cup and pressure government authorities to respect freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

FIFA Clashes with NGO Report on Labor Rights

Touting its recent commitments to "human and labour rights" and a "pioneer" monitoring system established to detect worker abuse at construction sites, the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) has clashed with an assessment from Human Rights Watch that labor conditions are deteriorating at its 2018 World Cup construction sites in Russia.
