Global Governance Advocates Call for World Parliament

Jo Leinen of the European Parliament and Andreas Bummel of the nongovernmental organization Democracy without Borders have published a book calling for the establishment of a "democratically elected world parliament," beginning with a "consultative body composed of national or regional parliamentarians" to be created by the UN General Assembly.

NAM Countries Push for "Fairer" Global Governance

At a recent ministerial conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), a group based in neutrality during the Cold War that now includes 120 countries, adopted a declaration calling for a "fair, inclusive, transparent and effective system of global governance" and an "indivisible" approach to achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

UN Official Criticizes Australian Refugee Processing

Indrika Ratwatte of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees recently criticized Australian officials for the "extremely detrimental impact," particularly involving mental health issues, their detention program for migrants bound for Australia and placed in external processing centers on various Pacific Islands had on asylum seekers in the region.
