    Arguing that tax avoidance in developing countries violates the human rights of these countries' citizens, the nongovernmental organization ActionAid has called for wealthy countries to review their tax treaties with poor countries for provisions that contribute to corporate avoidance of taxation and to rewrite these treaties to resemble the UN's model tax treaty.

    Chris Esdaile of the law firm Leigh Day writes that the Inter-American Court of Human Rights has found that Suriname violated the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights ("BHR") by not requiring a mining company to perform a "human rights impact assessment" regarding the rights of indigenous people affected by its operations in the country.

  • EU Backs Rules on Corporate Tax Reporting

    Politico reports that the Council of the EU has agreed to support rules requiring corporations to report to EU member states financial information from operations in every country in which they are located, as the European Commission prepares a proposal that would also require companies to disclose this information to the public.

  • CoE Pushes Government Implementation of UNGPs

    The Council of Europe ("CoE") Committee of Ministers has issued a recommendation for CoE members on implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights ("UNGPs"), including access to judicial remedy for alleged human rights violations, and on compiling a list of "best practices" for furthering the UNGPs.
