Human Security - Cities

Human Security Policy Division at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada

As part of an expert workshop on “Renewing Canada’s Human Security Agenda” in summer 2005, the Human Security Policy Division at Foreign Affairs and International Trade Canada (DFAIT) identified cities as a human security concern.  The new focus was animated partly by high rates of urbanization in the developing world and the general growth in city power, and partly as a result of Canada’s hosting of the Third World Urban Forum in Vancouver in June 2006.  In addition to research, DFAIT decided to establish this website for the Human Security and Cities project to generate interest in the topic, stimulate debate, and build a community of practice around what is still a nascent idea.
