Transparency International
Transparency International (TI) is a global civil society organization the fights against corruption. Since its founding in 1993, TI has established over 90 local national chapters and chapters-in-formation that fight against corruption at the national level. TI uses its global organization to campaign and lobby local governments to implement anti-corruption reforms and to build momentum for anti-corruption activities. TI is politically non-partisan and does not actively undertake investigations of alleged corruption on its own or expose individual cases, but does work with organizations that do. TI asserts that corruption has the harshest affect on the poor and traps millions of people in poverty, leading to social, economic, and political unrest. Its five global priorities cover corruption in politics, public contracting, the private sector, international anti-corruption conventions, and poverty and development.
The majority of TI’s funding comes from government development agency budgets and foundations. It also receives donations from private sector companies and income from honoraria and publications. The organization does receive funds from corporations who in the past have been involved in their own corruption scandals, but TI asserts that it has a diversified funding structure, that it has full control over where money is spent, and that companies formerly involved in dubious practices are working toward a business environment where bribery is not acceptable.
