One World Trust

One World Trust (OWT) is a think tank the researches and develops recommendations for reform to create a more accountability-focused policy and decision making process in global governance. OWT looks for accountability gaps in the global governance system and tries to highlight opportunities for cross-sector learning. It focuses its activities on international organizations, international law and regulation, and civil society.  It publishes a well-regarded annual Global Accountability report (link to latest one) which compares a select group of International NGOs, IGOs, and corporations on a range of transparency related issues.

One World Trust was founded in 1951 by a group of UK Parliamentarians in an effort to help the UN and other global institutions become more democratic, accountable, and transparent.  Its current research role was born out of OWT’s launch of Charter 99 for Global Democracy ahead of the 2000 Millennium Summit.  With Charter 99, One World Trust challenged global organizations to improve on their accountability to the people they affect and serve.

It offers consultancy services to the non-government, public, intergovernmental, and corporate sectors.  Based out of London, notable funders include the Ford Foundation, James Madison Trust, Baring Foundation, and The World Federalist Movement. Michael Hammer is the executive director of One World Trust.
