Disarmament and Peacekeeping

The UN Office of Disarmament Affairs (UNODA) promotes the goal of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and the strengthening of disarmament regimes in respect to other weapons of mass destruction, chemical and biological weapons.  It also promotes disarmament efforts in the area of conventional weapons, especially land mines and small arms.  UNODA provides substantive and organizational support for norm-setting in the area of disarmament through the work of the General Assembly and its First Committee, the Disarmament Commission, the Conference on Disarmament and other bodies.  It fosters preventive disarmament measures, such as dialogue, transparency and confidence building on military matters, and encourages regional disarmament efforts; these include the UN Register of Conventional Arms and regional forums.  It also provides information on UN disarmament efforts.

According to the UN Charter, the UN Security Council may authorize Peacekeeping missions.  Most of these operations are established and implemented by the UN with troops serving under UN operational command.  The Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO) is the department of the United Nations charged with preparing and managing UN peacekeeping operations.  UN peacekeepers remain members of their respective armed forces, and do not constitute an independent UN army.  In cases where direct UN involvement is not advisable considering the particular political situation, the Security Council authorizes regional organizations to undertake peacekeeping operations.
