UN Body Criticizes Australia’s Divorce Policy

The UN Human Rights Committee has opined that Australia must allow gay couples married overseas to obtain a divorce in the country, even though the country does not allow same-sex marriage, to comply with a provision of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights guaranteeing equal protection under the law.

BRICS Summit Focuses on Global Governance

Chinese news service Xinhua reports that the ninth annual summit of the BRICS countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa - in Xiamen, China, is expected to promote an increased role in global governance for the bloc as well as increased globalization through multilateral trade.

US Notifies UN of Withdrawal from Climate Deal

UN Secretary-General António Guterres expressed "major disappointment" regarding the future of efforts to combat climate change and "promote global security" as the US delegation to the UN officially notified him of the country's intention to withdraw from the UN's 2015 Paris climate deal "as soon as it is eligible to do so” in 2019.

Report Predicts Massive Global Climate Displacement

Feeding into global efforts to develop a new class of refugees fleeing the impacts of climate change, a report from the Asian Development Bank and the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research predicts that up to one billion people will be forced to migrate by 2100 due to climate change, with the Asia Pacific region being the hardest hit by the global phenomenon.
