UK Threatens Legal Action on Financial Transaction Levy

UK Chancellor of the Exchequer George Osborne has threatened an action in the Court of Justice of the EU as ten other EU countries move forward with the foundations of a plan for a "financial transaction tax" that would seek to recover money used to support banks during the bloc's financial crisis.

Visegrad Group Opposes "Mini-Schengen" Proposals

The "Visegrad Group" of countries - the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, and Poland - have set up a "Friends of Schengen" initiative to counter proposals from some government officials to establish a "mini-Schengen" passport-free travel area that would exclude Central and Eastern European countries.

Luxembourg Calls for Increased EU Border Controls

The Luxembourg Presidency of the Council of the EU has called for the establishment of a border-control operation run by the EU agency Frontex at the northern border of Greece to manage migration and for the reintroduction of identity checks and other border controls in other countries in the Schengen's currently passport-free travel area.

UK Complains of Double Standard in EU Recycling Proposal

The Telegraph reports that British Government officials are concerned that an EU proposal would require the country to recycle 65 percent of its household waste or face fines, while it would set lower targets for seven EU countries with the lowest recycling rates.
