EU Members Agree to Defense Fund, Command Structure

The Sydney Morning Herald reports that EU member states have agreed to a European Commission proposal for an EU defense fund of €1.5 billion to develop and acquire a range of military weaponry and equipment, including drones, and gave members three months to decide whether they would join an EU coalition that conducts military missions.

EU Leaders Dismiss UK Offer on Citizens' Rights

The Guardian reports that EU leaders at a summit in June expressed dissatisfaction regarding UK Prime Minister Theresa May's proposals for EU citizens' rights in Britain after Brexit, with European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker stating that he is unable to see how the Court of Justice of the EU (ECJ) could be excluded from the protection of these rights.

ECJ Permits Broad Leeway for Vaccine Litigation

CNN reports that the Court of Justice of the EU (ECJ) has ruled that, even in the absence of scientific evidence supporting the claim, courts in EU member states have a sufficient basis to find that a vaccine caused an illness if the vaccination occurred just before the illness, the patient was previously healthy, and a significant number of vaccinated people also became ill.

Cleppe: Attempts to "Soften" Brexit Are Unrealistic

Pieter Cleppe of the think tank Open Europe writes that the "obvious way" to prevent a "cliff-edge" or "chaotic event" in the Brexit process is to allow Britain to set its own trade and regulatory policies, which could not happen if the country remains in the EU's "single market" or customs union.
