Governments, NGOs Draft BHR Policy for Africa

A recent consultation in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, of representatives from African governments, the African Union (AU), businesses, academia, and global nongovernmental organizations has led to the drafting of an AU Policy on Business and Human Rights (BHR) that will seek to implement the BHR and environmental agendas across the continent.

UN Group Pushes G20 to Act on BHR in Supply Chains

The UN Working Group on Business and Human Rights (BHR) published an open letter calling on Group of 20 (G20) leaders to address human rights impacts of companies and state-owned enterprises in their complex global supply chains in line with the UN Guiding Principles on BHR and the "sustainable development" agenda.

BlackRock Supports Climate Risk Disclosure

Reuters reports that asset manager BlackRock, facing pressure from environmental and human rights NGOs for not backing activist shareholder resolutions, has taken up the agenda of the Group of 20's (G20) Financial Stability Board by including among its top "engagement priorities" in 2017 disclosure of climate change risks and boardroom diversity.

G20 Document Puts Climate Finance Onus on Companies

Bloomberg reports that a preliminary statement for a recent meeting of Group of 20 (G20) finance ministers removed references to government financial support for achieving the greenhouse gas emissions reduction goals set out in the UN's 2015 Paris deal in favor of private funding through multilateral development banks to reach the targets.

Consultant: "Carbon Finance" Contributes to SDGs

Ben Massie of the consulting company Natural Capital Partners calls on businesses to contribute to "carbon finance," or the practice of buying credits from projects that deliver a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions, to combat climate change and contribute to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
