The "Voluntary Guidelines to Support the Progressive Realization of the Right to Adequate Food in the Context of National Food Security" were developed by the Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations' Intergovernmental Working Group to eliminate the scourge of hunger once and for all. The Voluntary Guidelines, which were adopted in 2004, specify various actions that States can take in order to ensure the right to adequate food for their citizens. The document details 19 Guidelines which include economic development policies, establishing legal frameworks, ensuring access to resources and assets, food safety and consumer protection, allocating national financial resources, and dealing with natural and human-made disasters. In addition, the Voluntary Guidelines highlight how the international community can be used to help ensure the right to adequate food for everyone.
