The Right to Development as a Human Right

HUMAN RIGHTS

by Arjun Sengupta

In this article, Arjun Sengupta, the Independent Expert on the Right to Development appointed by the then UN Commission on Human Rights, examines the nature of the right to development; considers the value in looking at programs for development as a process of realization of human rights; considers why it has been difficult to reach a consensus on development as a human right; and presents the case that considerations of equity and justice are primary determinants of development and that, if there a trade-off such that growth will be less than the feasible maximum, that will have to be accepted in order to satisfy the concern for equity.  To access a copy of this article, please click here.
